Business travel boosts profits...

...and could help the US economy fight the recession according to research

  • In a report from Oxford Economics, research findings high-light an argument that a reduction in business travel can hamper business performance, quantifying the potential reduction in revenue from a lack of investment in face-to-face meetings.
  • It is estimated that for every dollar invested in business travel, companies can expect $12.50 in increased revenue and $3,80 in new profits.
  • Adam Sacks, MD of Oxford Economics said that a 10% increase in business travel across the board could potentially boost US gross GDP between 1.5% and 2.8%.
  • In an economic climate which has put business travel under greater scrutiny than ever before, does this research shed new light on the long-term implications?

Recipe Wiki and others

Collective recipe sharing sites are a popular phenomenon

  • Proving that food remains a buoyant subject for many, this slightly off-beat article discusses the evolution of recipe sharing websites.
  • One such site, Recipe Wiki on wikia.com, has seen traffic jump 60% since January.
  • Foodista.com has 6.5 million unique visitors per month in the US and has backing from investors, including Amazon. It’s founder, ex-Amazon executive, Barnaby Dorfmann believes "food is untapped."
  • However, the premise of these 'crowd-sourcing sites' – namely, that a recipe is uploaded and able to be tweaked by others - is possibly not appealing to everyone. This has already provoked a response with other new sites such as food52.com being created to allow an original recipe to be uploaded and preserved, whilst users vote for their favourite recipe based on a given theme.
  • Is this a short-term trend? Or should the industry be developing its own brand of 'wiki-fun'?
